The Range Report - Writer and Photographer Guidelines

About the Publication

The Range Report is published by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF). Its intent is to offer information that will help shooting range owners, operators and officers manage ranges in a professional, environmentally sound and economical manner while providing their shooters with an optimum experience. The magazine covers good business practices, community involvement, legislation and other topics of importance to the range administrator.

The quarterly periodical, published in January, April, July and October, is distributed to more than 9,000 readers in the shooting range community.

Opportunities for Freelancers

In addition to the regular departments authored and edited by staff and consultants, The Range Report features articles and photographs contributed by freelancers.

All article proposals should begin with a query to the editor sent to Glenn Sapir, The Range Report, 11 Mile Hill Rd., Newtown, CT 06470-2359, e-mail rangereport@nssf.org, fax (203) 426-1245.

The query should explain the focus of the proposed article, its significance to The Range Report readership, your credentials relevant to the proposal and an indication of the graphic support you might provide. Features should be aimed at the reader and the goals identified above. The best articles will draw upon the experiences of ranges to illustrate points. Articles must be more than entertaining; they should provide specific suggestions, examples and other information that will benefit the shooting range manager. If an article could, with the change of its lead, appear in other trade publications, it doesn't belong in The Range Report.

Cover photographs should feature people involved in a shooting range experience. The activity depicted can be shotgunning, riflery or handgunning, and photographers should be conscious of capturing a safe shooting environment, where subjects, for example, are wearing proper eye and ear protection.

We also welcome the opportunity to keep images on file for possible future cover or interior use.

Please allow us sufficient time to review article proposals and photographic submissions. For the return of submitted materials, please provide a stamped, self-addressed envelope. Articles, including complementary graphics, should not be sent to NSSF unless specifically requested by the editor. NSSF is not responsible for the return of, or loss or damage to, any unsolicited articles or photographs or items that may accompany your query.

Format, Payment and Rights

Only assigned articles will be considered. A contributor's agreement will be sent by the editor, and only upon its completion and return to the editor will an assignment be considered offered and accepted.

Submissions should be sent electronically, either on disk or by e-mail, to the address referenced above. Word or text documents are preferred. Articles will generally run 1,000 to 1250 words. In addition, two sidebars, together totaling no more than 500 words, should accompany the main text. An assignment letter will specify desired word length of the main text and sidebars. Photographs may be sent as prints or slides. High-resolution (300 or greater dpi at print size) scans and digital photographs in JPEG, TIF or EPS format should be delivered on CD ROMs or e-mailed (up to 8 MB total of files). Digital photographs should be sent in their original format, without any cropping or enhancements.

The editor shall request payment for articles and photographs upon his acceptance of the material. NSSF buys nonexclusive, unlimited print and Web rights for the text and one-time rights to the graphics, though those rights include use of the published graphics if the article is reprinted or posted on the Web. Payment for the text of feature articles shall be determined at the time of assignment, but is generally compensated at a one-time fee of $500. Payment for photographs is set at the following one-time fees: $350 for a cover, $125 for full-page use, $250 for a full two-page spread, and $50 to $100, depending on size, for fractional use.
